An Introduction

Welocome to “Follow My Thread”!  This blog is to share what’s going on at my shop, The Sewin’ Asylum, in Sun City, AZ.

Our story- I guess it starts with me.  Hi!  I’m Erica Doyle.  I have my degree in fashion design, but I don’t think I really wanted to be a designer.  I actually wanted to promote sewing- WHAT???  Yeah, sewing!   I loved it!  But in 1990 when I graduated, sewing was not exactly the cutting edge hobby.  But I persevered!  After a brief stint with Palmer & Pletsch in Portland, Oregon where I learned some magical secrets for the serger, I moved onward to Washington state where a small Bernina dealership took a chance on me.

I was a fresh-faced 22 year-old with a passion for sewing.  I was put in charge of teaching the owners’ classes for the sewing machines and sergers.

After a year I moved back to the Los Angeles area where I worked for another Bernina dealer.  I loved teaching sewing and working in the sewing industry, but something was pushing me to change direction.  I returned to school to pursue my elementary education certification.

Certification in hand, my husband and I moved to Phoenix, AZ and before I secured a teaching position, I was hired by a (you guessed it!) Bernina dealer.

That time was brief as I found a position teaching fourth grade.  I missed teaching sewing and in 1998 a Joann Fabric and Crafts opened up near my home and I was hired and teaching sewing nights and weekends.

Right at the time I was hired by Joann’s, I found out that I was pregnant.  I felt that I couldn’t manage a classroom of fourth graders and a baby, so I made the decision to leave the elementary classroom.

I taught at Joann’s, and as my classes grew more than what could be accommodated at the store, I began teaching sewing classes for adults and children from my home.  After four years of this I opened my first studio where I conducted classes for five years.  Eventually we outgrew that space and I moved to my first storefront, and then again we needed more space and we moved to our current location.  We’ve been sharing the love of sewing here for five years and have just renewed our lease for five more years.

As we’re moving forward, we’re looking forward to many great things.  In the shop we have a carefully curated collection of colorful cottons and stylish fashion fabrics (knits and other garment fabrics.  Soon we’ll be sharing our collections online for purchase.

It is my intent with this blog to share patterns, resources, and all things sewing.  I hope you enjoy the great content we have in store for you!

Happy stitchin’
